The Actor is the Theatre

Saturday 19 October 10am - Sunday 15 December 5.30pm

with Sarah Kane

The one-day workshops planned for 2024 - 2025 provide an opportunity to explore practically the core elements of Michael Chekhov’s acting technique that he continued to develop throughout his life. They range from the very beginnings of any serious artistic research and exploration to the finer points of developing a stage life and creating character, including the character’s psychological gesture, voice and speech.

Each workshop will be an entirety in itself and can be taken individually. Nevertheless, each workshop builds on the one or ones before, and priority will be given to those wishing to be part of the three groups of workshops (September – December, January – April, May – July) and in the entire series.

Part 1: October – December 2024

Saturdays: ACTING AND THE IMAGINATION

Sundays:    SPEECH AND THE IMAGINATION

Part 2: January – March 2025

Saturdays:  FROM MOVEMENT TO GESTURE IN ACTING

Sundays:    FROM MOVEMENT TO GESTURE IN SPEECH

Part 3: April – July 2025

Saturdays: CREATING CHARACTER

Sundays:   CREATING A CHARACTER IN VOICE AND SPEECH

The sessions aim to introduce participants to or deepen their practical understanding of the strongly creative and highly artistic techniques developed by the Russian actor in the middle of the twentieth century and augmented in his training by Steiner’s approach to speech and voice. Both approaches aim to inspire and empower actors for their future work by building a both living and sensitive bridge between the movement and the speech of an actor..

Please bring clothes and shoes suitable for both movement and speech workshops as a well as a piece of text such as a monologue or poem known by heart, so that it can be used in the exploration of any aspect of the techniques in practice.

Workshop Fees:

1 workshop day: £60.00

1 workshop weekend: £110.00

3 workshop days: £150.00

PART 1: ACTING AND THE IMAGINATION

1. Saturday September 7 2024 --> POSTPONED

10.00 – 17.30

ENLIVENING IMAGES

How can actors develop their imagination so that it becomes a tool in their tool-bag of techniques? This day of practice and exploration will start with concentration and observation, and then apply any discoveries to strengthening the imagination.

2. Saturday October 19 2024

10.00 – 17.30

ENLIVENING MOVEMENT: MOVEMENT QUALITIES

This will be a day of connecting movement and the imagination, exploring four archetypal qualities and improvising with them, as a step towards transforming into character.

3. Saturday December 14 2024

   10.00 – 17.30

ENLIVENING SPACE: ATMOSPHERES

Giving actors the tools with which to develop a sense of the life of the space they work in is one of Chekhov’s great contributions to the art of acting: we will be investigating those tools with the help of the imagination.

PART 1: SPEECH AND THE IMAGINATION

1. Sunday September 8 2024 ---> POSTPONED

    10.00 – 17.30

IMAGINATION, IMAGES, WORDS

How can actors engage with the imagination to help to give life to their words? Finding and inwardly connecting with the images that words express will be the theme of the workshop.

2. Sunday October 20 2024

    10.00 – 17.30

ENLIVENING SPEECH: SOUNDS

Consonants have a life of their own that can enrich and inspire an actor’s speech. The workshop will explore how the four different qualities of consonants and their connection to the four qualities of movement can create a living bridge between movement and speech.

3. Sunday December 15 2024

   10.00 – 17.30

COLOURING WORDS

Can words carry atmospheres and their colours? The workshop will explore how the wealth of English vowels can be used to colour and transform any piece of text.
