Rudolf Steiner characterised Goethe’s scientific studies as ‘a physical science based on occult principles’. As an editor of Goethe’s scientific writings and through his later anthroposophical research he continued to extend and deepen Goethe’s insights. This illustrated presentation will explore the hidden principles underlying Goethe’s work in the sciences (including his theory of colour) and how they arose in the course of Goethe’s life.

Dr. Douglas Miller is a retired professor of German at the University of Michigan–Flint in the United States. His research, publication and lecturing has focused on Goethe’s accomplishments as a scientist and writer, as well as on the history and meaning of Rudolf Steiner and anthroposophy.
