Intercultural Eurythmy Festival

Friday 5 July 7pm - Saturday 6 July 6pm

Eurythmy is an expressive movement art developed by Rudolf and Marie Steiner in the early 20th century. The word eurythmy stems from Greek roots meaning beautiful or harmonious rhythm. A eurythmist moves the spoken word and music itself, the inner dynamic, the emotional expressiveness.

Though originated in Central Europe, Eurythmy has now encircled the globe, being cultivated and transformed through the different cultures it has met. At our intercultural festival, alongside established UK groups Peredur Eurythmy and Eurythmy West Midlands, we welcome Eurythmy India to the UK for the first time.

The Intercultural Eurythmy Festival at Rudolf Steiner House is the first of its kind in London: it aims to foster connection and collaboration amongst performers from different cultural and artistic backgrounds, and to develop new audiences for the arts of eurythmy and eurythmy theatre.

The Festival offers four performances and a rich palette of diverse workshops by members of Eurythmy West Midlands, Peredur Eurythmy and Eurythmy India.

Performances

Friday 5th July

19.00 The Way Leads On – Peredur Eurythmy

Through the words of the poets, The Way Leads On gives voice to the many-faceted experience of 'self' and how we identify with it in the course of our life. The images evoked resonate with the interspersed pieces of music, creating a whole greater than its parts. Featuring works by Wright, Grieg, Muir, Steiner, Shakespeare, Beethoven. Our performers are drawn from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of our training, with two guest appearances by Eurythmy India. Directed by Georgie Howlett and Sigune Brinch.

20.15 Shakespeare’s Fool - Eurythmy West Midlands

Shakespeare’s Fool presents a collage of wise-foolish moments and lots of foolish love in Shakespeare’s plays. This Shakespearian experience is interwoven and finds its echo in Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano (1915), with its quirky moments and abrupt mood changes. Performed and co-directed by six young talented stage eurythmists together with Jan Martin (actor), Alan Stott (piano), Robert Davey (cello) and Maren Stott (Artistic Director).

19.30 Love, and Be Silent - Scenes from Shakespeare’s King Lear - Eurythmy India

A unique chance to experience the combined arts of eurythmy and theatre. This dynamic ensemble offers a unique interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, set in 16th century India. Themes of familial inheritance and power, forgiveness and karmic retribution are explored here using both the dynamic movement of eurythmy and drama.

A diverse cast of actor/eurythmists and musicians from Nepal, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and China bring depth and texture to this performance. Sitar, Tabla and piano pieces by György Sándor Ligeti and Sergei Rachmaninoff provide a scintillating musical setting throughout. Directed by Daniel Skinner and Diana Constantin.
