Ruskin and Turner
With David Lowe
Friday 5 July 7.30am - 8.45pm
In this anniversary year of Ruskin’s birth, it may be appropriate to consider the importance of his relationship to Turner in the wider context of his life. Ruskin championed Turner’s work at a time when it was losing favour with critics and public alike. He ushered in the final and greatest period of Turner’s work which is still not fully understood. We will read from Ruskin’s writings and show the paintings referred to. Ruskin’s words can still help us to find a way in to the paintings such as few other commentators on Turner can do. An introduction to Ruskin’s life given by Simon Pelling will begin the evening.
